The mafic rocks preserve evidence of a precursor eclogite-facies mineral assemblage containing garnet, omphacite, amphibole, quartz and rutile. Mineral equilibria forward modelling and Zr-in-rutile thermometry indicate that the eclogite assemblage records peak pressure-temperature conditions of 16–18 kbar and 675–760 °C. In the geological record, eclogite-facies rocks are irrefutable indicators of subduction and collisional orogenesis, yet occurrences of eclogites in the ancient Earth (> 1.5 Ga) are rare. eclogite facies A set of metamorphic mineral assemblages produced by metamorphism of basic igneous rocks under high-pressure, moderate-temperature conditions and typically characterized by the development of the mineral assemblage pyrope garnet and omphacite (an Na-rich, high-pressure pyroxene). The eclogites are usually encountered as bands or lenses in crystalline complexes belonging to the granulite, amphibolite or the lawsonite-glaucophane facies; often appearing as if they have been tectonically squeezed into an alien environment.

Eclogite in thin section The cogenetic eclogite-facies shear zones and pseudotachylytes were variably retrograded during Caledonian amphibolite-facies metamorphism.

Eclogite mineralogy, metaphysical, crystal healing properties. Crystal Description. Eclogite is a rock that typically forms from high pressure metamorphism of mafic igneous rock at temperatures in excess of 500 o C and pressures in excess of 12kbar. Eclogite facies rocks are usually associated with blueschist facies rocks and can form when oceanic crust is subducted to great depths before

[ ′ek·lə‚jīt ‚fā·shēz] (petrology) A type of facies composed of eclogite and formed by regional metamorphism at extremely high temperature and pressure. McGraw-Hill Dictionary of Scientific & Technical Terms, 6E, Copyright © 2003 by The McGraw-Hill Companies, Inc. Eclogite facies is determined by the temperature and pressure conditions required to metamorphose basaltic rocks to an eclogite assemblage. The typical eclogite mineral assemblage is garnet (pyrope to almandine) plus clinopyroxene (omphacite). eclogite- facies maÞc rocks were derived from an ocean ic platea u, whereas the lower grade maÞc rocks , i.e., am-phibo lites, repr esent typical mid-oc ean ridge basalt Eclogite petrography.

Eclogite facies

The eclogite facies is based on the distinctive association of omphacite pyroxene and pyroperich garnet forming the rock-type eclogite. Knowledge of rock types other than basic rocks in this facies is very sparse. Yoder and Tilley (1962) give possible assemblages (Fig. 1). Eclogite Facies conditions of thermodynamic stability of eclogites, defined with respect to the principal factors of meta-morphism: pressure, temperature, and partial pressures of volatile components in fluids. Eclogite facies The eclogite facies was initially recognized in rocks only of basaltic composition, which are transformed at the pressure-temperature conditions of the eclogite facies into spectacular red and green rocks composed of the anhydrous mineral assemblage garnet plus omphacite. The albite-epidote-hornfels facies is a facies at low pressure and relatively low temperatures.

The heterogeneous nature of the eclogite-facies assemblages in metagabbro can thus provide information on the complete reaction history in a descent–ascent cycle of subduction. The key prerequisite for making this possible is the partial survival of mineral replacement textures that symbolize frozen-in chemical reactions in the rocks that have not gone to completion because of water deficiency. I investigated the metamorphic evolution of the eclogite-facies rocks in the St. Cyr klippe using isochemical phase equilibrium thermodynamic (pseudosection) modeling.

The new data indicate separate stages of deformation at eclogite-facies conditions for each recognized independent kilometer-sized tectono-metamorphic slice, between ∼85 and 60 Ma, with evidence of intermittent decompression (ΔP ∼ 0·5 GPa) within only the Fondo slice. The zircon within the V. Grib eclogites cannot have formed during the generation of an eclogite-facies assemblage at crustal or mantle depths, given the lack of plagioclase in both cases.
